Jory Hull was born in 1971 in New Hampshire and is currently based in Brooklyn, New York. He studied painting and photography at the Savannah College of Art and Design and at the Corcoran College in Washington, D.C., building a practice that spans photography, direction, production and graphic design over more than two decades.
Hull’s photographs investigate and unsettle common ways of seeing everyday objects and views by altering their context and narrative. In Twin Infinitives, he invites the viewer to participate in editing his collage work, making them ultimately responsible for the final selection of the project. Underground Improvisation gathers found advertising posters from the New York subway system, transformed by acts of alteration, deformation or destruction carried out by passers-by and photographed afterward by the artist — a running record of advertising’s changing life within the city’s underground.
Flyover State, by contrast, is a series of large-scale mounted photographs of varying size taken by the artist on transcontinental US flights between 2006 and 2009, translating the abstraction of aerial landscape into a sustained photographic project. Across these bodies of work, Hull moves between fairly straightforward, photojournalistic approaches and conceptual ideas rooted in digital process, using different cameras alongside the computer to correct, composite and transform imagery.
Galerie Julian Sander was the first gallery to bring this complex and varied body of work to a wider audience. Selected projects include Underground Improvisations (2007), Flyover State (2010), Twin Infinitives (2012) and My Mind Is Racing (2013).
